Ein apokaliptisches Fragment

In 1804, Karoline von Günderode sent her text “Ein apokaliptisches Fragment” [An Apocalyptic Fragment] as part of a letter to Bettina von Arnim, who responded with her own epistolary commentary. Günderode’s text deals with the themes of the individual and the cosmos, finiteness and infinity, separation and merging. The text inspired an underwater photograph that thematizes the idea of becoming one with the element of water. The text is printed on the original photograph (90 × 90 cm) in blue as a square block, slightly askew. The underwater scene, mounted on cardboard and laminated, is cut into nine pieces. The nine pieces are housed in a clamshell box; in order to be viewed, they must be taken out and put together like a puzzle. Bettina von Arnim’s commentary is printed in blue on Japanese paper.
