Leporello 1 + Leporello 2

This project is the first collaboration with Peter Malutzki. In front of the camera fixed on a tripod, Malutzki moves against a light-colored background, holding a two-meter-long pole. The time exposure causes the movements of the pole and the actor to accumulate within the space. Next, 18 photographs are chosen and compiled into a sequence, which is used in two accordions.

Leporello 1

Ines von Ketelhodt typographically overprints this photo sequence with an excerpt from Joachim Schumacher’s text “Leicht ’gen Morgen unterwegs. Eine Philosophische Reise” [Traveling Light Toward the Morning: A Philosophical Journey]. The text, following the theme of lines/poles, is broken down into lines, words and sometimes even single letters, and is staged within the frame of the image on each page.

Peter Malutzki overprints the same photo sequence using brass rules with multiple colors. Some of the overprinted sequences extend across several double-page spreads. A quotation from the text “Natürliches Zauber-Buch. Oder: Neu-eröffneter Spiel-Platz rarer Künste” from 1745 [A Book of Natural Magic. Or: A Newly Opened Play-Ground for Rare Arts] precedes the images as a motto.

18 black and white photographs offset printed, hand-set (Bauer Bodoni, Futura), letterpress printed, Zerkall mould-made paper, double-sided accordion, printed paper-covered boards, each 36 pages, 15 × 20 cm (extends out to 270 × 20 cm), each 60 numbered and signed copies, Offenbach/Main & Lahnstein 1989
